"The ... individual had deliberately bypassed our website security, gaining access to information from initial website inquiries in an attempt to extort money from the company," says Peter Boddy, chairman at the group, in a statement provided to Information Security Media Group.
Compromised information includes names, addresses, telephone numbers, dates of birth and e-mail addresses. No clinical or financial information was exposed, Boddy says.
Upon learning of the breach, the group informed the police and is assisting them in the investigation. Harley Medical Group is also informing the UK Information Commissioner's Office regarding the incident.
"Our website was taken down while a fix was put in place," Boddy says. "Further upgrades will be implemented in the near future."
Cyber-attacks involving extortion attempts have been a growing problem, several security experts say (see: Basecamp Faces DDoS Extortion Attempt).
