Rethinking Cybersecurity: The Role of MSSPs

Kevin Robertson of Acumen on Effective Cybersecurity Solutions Beyond Microsoft
Kevin Robertson, COO and co-founder, Acumen

Organizations often grapple with the question of whether relying solely on Microsoft for cybersecurity is enough. Kevin Robertson, chief operating officer and co-founder of Acumen, makes the case for including best in breed security technology and services from specialized vendors. This approach can help secure small and midsized enterprises that lack in-house expertise.

Managed security service providers can play a pivotal role in bridging the gap for organizations seeking comprehensive security solutions, Robertson said. MSSPs not only give security teams access to advanced technologies, but they also provide skilled personnel and streamlined processes, which are essential for maintaining a robust security posture, he said.

Previously, many saw MSSPs as being "completely unaffordable, unachievable for any organization outside big banks, fintech," he said. One of the biggest changes in recent years has been the availability of services to the SMB market, giving SMBs access to "enterprise security solutions, processes, technology and the people."

In this video interview with Information Security Media Group at Infosecurity Europe 2024, Robertson also discussed:

  • The importance of heterogeneity in security products;
  • Tailoring security solutions to meet the unique needs of organizations, particularly in critical national infrastructure sectors;
  • Fostering competition for innovation in cybersecurity.

Robertson's cybersecurity career spans 15 years across many roles in significant organizations. Prior to Acumen, he was the chief security officer at Silver Cloud.
